Endangered heritage

The European Correspondent - Aug 2024

UNESCO has been recognising important cultural and natural heritage sites since 1978. Sites can be placed on the danger list when their integrity is at risk due to human activity or natural occurrences. A site can be taken off the danger list if corrective action is taken.

6 sites are currently listed as in danger. Of these, 3 are in Ukraine, the country with the most sites in danger.

Another 10 sites were in danger in the past but issues have now been addressed. Sites are predominantly in danger due to human activity: mining activity, high-rise and rampant construction, poor site management, and political instability.

Waffle chart showing the number of UNESCO world heritage sites in each European country. Sites which were in danger, are in danger or were delisted are coloured in yellow, red, and drak grey instead of grey.
