The number of wildfires over 30 hectares across Europe has increased sharply since 2006. As more large fires are recorded, and as more land is burnt, Europe will have to deal with increasing pressures of climate change and biodiversity loss.
This year alone, the 4.2K recorded fires have burnt away more than 700,00 hectares, an area larger than twice the size of Luxembourg.
The chart shows data since 2006 when Copernicus, the European Union’s ‘earth observation programme’, started keeping records using satellite imagery.
