Women’s right to vote

The European Correspondent - Jul 2024

In a bumper year of elections, we look back at when women received the vote in Europe. While Finland granted votes to women as "early" as 1906, Liechtenstein only granted them in 1984, a mere 40 years ago.

In some countries, such as Belgium, Greece and the United Kingdom, women received voting rights in stages. Property owners, mothers, married women and educated women were often given rights to vote first, often in local elections. Universal suffrage, which is shown in the chart below, came later.

This historical progression highlights that voting rights were a crucial milestone. However, the journey towards full gender equality in political participation and representation continues to evolve across Europe.
